Sacred Spacephotographs seek to transport viewers through 4,000 years of cultural
history, from towering snow-covered mountains and mystical ceremonial sites of the pre-Hispanic world, to peaceful village churches and grand cathedrals of the New World. The richness of sacred tradition belonging to the diverse cultures of Mexico and Guatemala came together to create a wholly new cultural tradition and spirituality, as we know it today.
As the photographer, the experience of photographing this body of work has been life-changing. Steeped in rich history that often reflects the patina of unbroken use through many centuries, these photographs of sweeping landscapes and small places of devotion depict as honestly as possible, the fascinating sacredness of these historic lands.
I began photographing places of historical and cultural significance while living in Egypt during the early 1970’s. When I moved back to the United States, I often traveled to the Middle East to continue work. However I longed for a project of equal significance closer to home. Sacred Spacewas to become my all-absorbing project—to study, photograph and love—with many locations within a day’s drive from my home in Texas.
Although this body of work was grandly exhibited in 2000 with over 200 mural-sized images (some enlarged up to 30 feet), additions are never-ending. The archive presently consists of over 3,000 unique images.
